SIAM CSE19 Volunteer Opportunities

The goals of the SIAM CSE19 BE program are to bring students, faculty, and professionals to the conference, engage them in conference activities and the computational science and engineering (CSE) community, and provide special programming to enhance the experience as well as impact career trajectories.

BE participants are recruited from groups underrepresented in CSE, such as women, minorities, people with disabilities, first generation scholars, and people from under-privileged backgrounds. For many of the BE participants, SIAM CSE19 will be their first experience at a scientific conference. Many will be undergraduate students from minority serving institutions, women’s and community colleges, or small liberal arts colleges. For some, attending SIAM CSE19 will have a dramatic impact on their future.

We are recruiting volunteers to serve as Mentors and volunteers for Career and Professional Development Activities.

Mentors
A mentor is someone more knowledgeable and experienced than the protégé who guides the protégé, informally transfers knowledge, social capital, and often provides psychosocial support. Mentoring relationships are a learning and developmental partnership and typically both the mentor and the protégé derive a variety of benefits. At SIAM CSE17 the BE program will provide structured, semi-structured, and unstructured mentor-protégé activities. Some of the activities will include mentor/protégé pairings and some will not. Mentors who have been matched with a specific protégé will be asked to meet with the protégé at least once during the conference and will be encouraged to continue communication beyond the conference.

Volunteers for Career and Professional Development Activities
The BE program will have a variety of career, leadership, and professional development activities which will need volunteers to serve as panelists, or in other roles.  If you have expertise or experiences to share with participants in any of these areas, we would love to hear from you.
