SIAM CSE21 Broader Engagement Program

Jump start your career…join the community

The Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) 2021 Computational Science and Engineering (CSE21) conference Broader Engagement (BE) program will provide a rich scientific program, mentoring, and career and professional development to students from underrepresented and underprivileged backgrounds who aspire to broaden their experience in research-based professional activities.  CSE is indispensable for leading-edge investigation and engineering design in a vast number of industrial sectors, including, for example, aerospace, automotive, biological, chemical, and semiconductor technologies that all rely increasingly on advanced modeling and simulation. Women, racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, first-generation scholars, and others from underprivileged backgrounds are supported to attend the conference and participate in the BE@CSE21 events.

I had so many self-doubts regarding the career… attending this workshop made me confident in the career path and informed me of the pitfalls I could have on my way and how to deal with those pitfalls. I also love the guided affinity groups

I consider the Broader Engagement (BE) program experience to have been absolutely the most valuable and empowering conference experience I have had to date as a student.

I was so inspired and enthused by all of the research, opportunities and the feeling of community, that when I got back, I started a student chapter of SIAM.

SIAM CSE21 Conference

March 1 – 5, 2021

Now 100% interactive virtual*

* In response to the continued health threat posed by Covid-19, SIAM CSE21 will be moving to an all virtual platform. The conference dates will remain March 1-5, 2021, and all features of the meeting, including poster sessions, panels, networking opportunities, and career fair, will take place in an interactive and engaging online venue.

While the virtual format of the conference will be a first for CSE, SIAM believes that it will afford us exciting opportunities. For example, the live and interactive poster sessions will allow presenters to use multimedia; now unrestricted by physical space, cash-prize-winning posters can also be shared with all attendees.

Guided Affinity Groups

The Guided Affinity Groups (GAGs) has been a long-standing favorite of participants. These small learning groups allow participants with shared technical interests the opportunity to receive guidance from CSE volunteers who are knowledgeable in the conference themes. The GAGs meet prior to and throughout the conference to discuss and explore the technical topics and then the groups share what they learned at the end of the week. Learn more about each group by clicking the link below.

BE Participants

Sustainable Horizons Institute is excited to announce that we are supporting over 100 BE@CSE21 participants. Learn more about the participants by clicking the links below.

BE Organizing Committee

The BE Organizing Committee is comprised of community volunteers, many of whom are past BE participants. We appreciate the collaborative work of all the committee members. Learn more about each member of the committee by clicking the link below.

BE Schedule

Throughout the years, the broader engagement program has gained recognition from participants, volunteers, and the community for the innovative program design, activities, and community building throughout the week-long conference and beyond. This year is no different and many of our renowned activities are a part of this year’s agenda. Take a look at the schedule by clicking the link below.
