Giving Tuesday

Today people around the world will come together to celebrate generosity and make an impact!

At Sustainable Horizons Institute, we envision a world in which all students, academics, scientists, and engineers work in environments that are inviting, engaging, and reflective of their lived experiences. We strive towards this goal by supporting and mentoring scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from all underrepresented communities and fostering science and technology ecosystems that value and seek greater inclusion and diversity.

This year with your support, the Broader Engagement program was held at the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) 2021 Computational Science and Engineering CSE21 conference.  Sustainable Horizons Institute initiated the Broader Engagement program at SIAM in 2015, and the program has grown and matured over the years.  With humble beginnings BE@CSE15, supported 40 students and early career faculty/professionals through your generous support, donated hotel rooms, and a few forward thinking organizations who believed in our vision.  The BE@CSE21 supported over 100 students and faculty in an engaging week of virtual community building through volunteer led Guided Affinity Groups, mentoring, tutorials, and professional development activities.  We also helped to organize a three-part conference-wide Diversity and Inclusion panel where members of underrepresented groups shared their stories, organizational leaders discussed efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, and we engaged in interactive dialogue with the society members.

After four BE@SIAM programs over the last eight years, we are honored that SIAM has asked SHI to expand BE to other SIAM conferences.  To meet that request, we are excited to share that we plan to initiate a new BE program at the SIAM Mathematics of Data Science conference in 2022 (MDS22).

As we work to kick off this new program, will you help us support bright young researchers as they realize their dreams and develop pathways to their future?
