Research Opportunity for Faculty and Students from Diverse Backgrounds
Imagine yourself collaborating with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Computing Sciences staff, developing solutions to pressing scientific and engineering problems while making use of some of the fastest supercomputers, tools, methods, and high performance computing. All the while, engaging your students in world-class research, creating pathways for their futures, and helping Computing Sciences diversify its staff.
This program, developed under a partnership between Sustainable Horizons Institute and Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences, is designed for faculty from a variety of institutions including Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) and women’s and community colleges who are supporting students from under-represented or under-privileged backgrounds. Faculty benefit from collaborative leading-edge research with computing scientists at Berkeley Lab. Students who are selected by the faculty work side-by-side on exciting research projects using state of the art equipment and tools. Faculty supervise their student teams.
To facilitate the matching of faculty to Berkeley Lab research projects, selected faculty will be invited to a workshop at Berkeley Lab on December 7-8, 2015. Computing Sciences staff will discuss their research projects and interests. Invited faculty will present their work during a poster blitz and poster session. Ample time will be provided for further discussions to explore potential research collaborations. Matched faculty will be assisted in applying for the appropriate Computing Sciences summer visitors program (several opportunities are available, such as the Visiting Faculty Program and the Berkeley Lab Undergraduate Faculty Fellowship).

Eligibility
- Must be a full-time faculty member at an accredited U.S. degree granting, postsecondary, institution of higher education.
- Student team members must be invited to participate by the applying faculty member and must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student and must have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate or graduate
- Must be 18 years or older at the start of program
- Must have earned a high school diploma or GED
- Participants must have medical insurance during their time at the Lab
Expectations
- If invited, attend the Matching Workshop.
- If selected for follow on summer program:
- Bring one or more students
- Be fully engaged in research and resident during the summer for 10 weeks
- Complete all Berkeley Lab safety and procedural requirements

- To facilitate the matching of faculty with Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences staff, a workshop will be held December 7-8, 2015 at the lab in Berkeley, CA. Selected faculty applicants will be invited to participate in the workshop to explore possible research collaborations. A networking session will also be held at SC15 for those who will be attending the conference.
- Faculty selected to attend the matching workshop will be notified in early November and travel arrangement for the workshop must be completed by November 13, 2015
- Faculty who have successfully matched after the workshop will be assisted with application to Berkeley Lab summer programs
