Life is about taking risks, getting completely out of your comfort zone, and learning how to come together from different walks of life to achieve common goals filled with unity and improvement.
My name is Kaayla Tippins, and I now stand as a second-year graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in Bioinformatics. When attending Broader Engagement at SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering in 2019, I had the most outstanding experiences of my entire undergraduate career presenting research and networking.
The best parts of BE were the authentic conversations with individuals who I considered highly successful in their field. In all honesty, the Broader Engagement community is extremely open-minded to learn any spectrum of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) presented. This program is wholly designed to inform, network, and learn about any and everything someone shows interest in studying within computational sciences.
I could mention individuals like Mary Ann, Lois Curfman, and Priscilla Kelly who have made the experience what it was, but that would be pages of names and organizations. I am extremely grateful for simply having the opportunity to have sat alongside all the amazingly beautiful people who help keep SIAM what it is designed to be, and also who have granted me the right to be comfortable while forever challenging my creativity of thinking and personal goals.
I highly recommend all STEM majors to challenge yourself by getting exposed to seasoned individuals during conferences, webinars, luncheons, etc. of similar or related fields as the one you are looking to be part of. #SIAMCSE19 #BroaderEngagementCommunity.
