Biography:
My name is Liam Maloy, I am a 21 year old under graduate studying in Montclair State University. I am a senior majoring in IT. I All though I have coding in class experience I am also involved in many extra curricular activities. One of them is being secretary for my Filipino club on campus. This taught me people skills, like how to be a leader, responsible and how to be someone to look up too. Being that person to rely on when it comes to setting up and running events as well as keeping track of documents is also rewarding. Outside of school I am also a signed to a model agency. I learned how to professionally network and make a brand for myself. With the skills that I learned through all my activities I’ve learned how to be the best version of myself.

What courses or academic preparation have you completed to prepare for a summer internship experience?
I have taken Data Structures and Algorithms, Computer systems, Data Science and statistics, 2 courses of Biology, Python Programming 1, Fundamentals of Programing 1 & 2. Currently I am taking Systems programing, Intro to Human-Comp Interaction, internet computing, computer networks, and database systems.

Have you published any research or worked on research/technical projects? No
Where has your research been published or where have you conducted research/technical projects?

Please describe your research/academic interests:
My research was done in the Intro to HPC boot-camp that happened over the summer. We tried to find way to make solar panels more affordable. I am also interested in learning more about the IT field as well as working with HPC computer systems.

Computational and Data Science Areas:
Computer Science; High-Performance Computing

Research Synergy:
I attended the Intro to HPC Bootcamp over the summer. The program opened my eyes to what was possible with coding, as well with importance of the DOE labs. I live in New Jersey, and when the sky turned orange this summer due to the Canadian fires, my view shifted on climate change and the importance of forest preservation. I learned with the boot-camp that with AI/ Machine learning, we can try and predict how these fires started and ways to prevent them in advanced. With using the power of DOE labs it will be the most time efficient way to solve this urgent issue.

Motivation:
My motivations is to help prevent another dramatic forest fire. I have asthma so I know how risky breathing the outside air during that time may be. If I could code or have any impact for energy conservation I would feel that my work would have more of a purpose than working for a tech company making their phones fancier.
