What was the most impactful part of the BE program for you, and how did it influence your perspective on your studies or career goals?

The most impactful aspect of the BE program was the connections made and conversations I had with my peers, mentor, program leaders, and other participants of the conference. Though I learned an incredible amount about my field and was exposed to a wealth of new ideas and inspiration, one of the most impactful takeaways was the importance of community. Preparing to enter a point of change in my academic career, I feel that this experience came at the perfect time to build a network of mutual support among my peers and mentors.

Can you share a memorable moment from the conference—perhaps a session, discussion, or connection with a mentor—that stood out to you?

My most memorable moment was when meeting with my mentor and seeking advice concerning my future plans. Our conversation ranged from brainstorming creative solutions to research problems, to discussing the importance of maintaining balance when pursuing a PhD. It was incredibly meaningful for me to not only discuss my research interests and academic goals, but also to receive sincere advice and words of wisdom from my mentor’s own experience.

How did participating in the BE program affect your confidence, skills, or sense of community within the computational science/data science field?

One of the most exciting aspects of being a researcher is knowing that there is an infinite amount of new information to learn and discoveries to make. Nevertheless, it is also important to also realize the capabilities that one has to pursue this knowledge. Before participating in the BE program, I knew that I had passion for my research, for my field, and for learning, but this program gave me the confidence to believe in myself and to be curious. This was especially apparent when presenting my poster. I got an incredible amount of thoughtful feedback, suggestions, and comments. I emerged from this session with inspiration and motivation to seek conversations, new ideas, and opportunity for growth at every turn, as well as a very newfound spark of confidence in my abilities as a budding researcher.

What advice would you give to future BE participants, especially those who are hesitant to attend or are attending for the first time?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! In fact, ask as many as you possibly can! Everybody is more than happy to discuss, to explain, and – after all – you’re here to learn and to have fun!

What other SHI project are you interested in, or have you attended any other programs before?

I am interested in attending many, many, other programs, but have not yet attended!
