I am currently a Linux Systems Engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where I work on a wide range of systems, research, and technical initiatives. My work includes setting up and maintaining HPC clusters, remediating vulnerable systems, developing dashboards and tools, supporting researchers, teaching, and other systems engineering and research-focused projects. I work directly with researchers to understand their scientific needs and translate those needs into technical solutions that help them effectively carry out and advance their research.
I have both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in computer science and have previously interned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, NASA, CVS Health, and Morningstar, where I gained experience across a variety of technical and professional areas. My journey with SHI began with the Intro to High-Performance Computing Bootcamp, followed by the Sustainable Research Pathways (SRP) program. I have since participated in several SHI Broadening Engagement (BE) programs and continue to be involved with SHI.
I have attended and presented at a number of conferences, where I have presented research, helped deliver HPC minitutorials, or both. I am passionate about teaching, mentoring, and helping others discover opportunities in STEM and scientific computing.
I applied to serve on the organizing committee because I believe I want to give back to the community that has played an important role in my academic and professional journey. SHI is a major reason I am where I am today, working at a national laboratory. Before participating in SHI’s Intro to HPC Bootcamp, I did not know about HPC or the career opportunities available at national laboratories. Through SHI, I have participated in several programs that shaped my education and career, and now I want to give back to the community that helped me get my start.
Because I am still relatively early in my career, I believe I can offer a unique perspective. I remember what it felt like to be new to HPC, research, and conferences, and I understand many of the questions that come with getting started. I have also experienced SHI as both a participant and someone who helps others, giving me insight into how we can better support new participants.
I hope to contribute to SHI in whatever way I can and help create an environment where people feel welcomed and encouraged to explore new opportunities.
