Welcome to the Building Engagement program organized by the Sustainable Horizons Institute at the U.S. Research Software Engineers Conference (BE@US-RSE25) participant information page.
The BE Program was created in 2007 for the Supercomputing (SC) Conference to engage students and early-career researchers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Since then, the program has grown and evolved: it was brought to several Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) conferences, expanded to other SIAM events, and has welcomed over 300 participants.
BE@US-RSE25 takes place during the three-day US-RSE 2025 conference and offers participants a wide range of valuable experiences, including technical sessions, plenaries, and interactive discussions. The program helps students and early-career researchers deepen their knowledge, build new skills, and develop a sense of belonging within the research software engineering community through mentorship, Guided Affinity Groups, and professional development workshops

Guided Affinity Groups (GAGs) are designed to help participants get the most out of the US-RSE25 conference sessions. Led by volunteer community members, these small learning groups explore conference topics from an accessible perspective by meeting before each session, attending the session together, and then debriefing afterward. BE@US-RSE25 attendees will meet with their affinity group leads virtually before the conference and then daily during the event. At the BE Wrap-Up session, attendees will give a brief 5–10 minute presentation sharing what they learned from their experiences. All conference participants are welcome to join the morning affinity group stand-ups and help expand the educational experience for BE attendees.
